Bul 178 New Moon Watch
Watch
The New Moon will only be visible this evening in the southwest Pacific, not much east of the day line. West of there it will be the 29th of Ethanim (fourth day into the Sabbath). As that evening makes its way around the earth, the New Moon will be visible increasingly further north, yet possibly not as far north as the Mount of Olives or even the northern United States due to it being too low in the sky and thus faded by atmospheric haze. Also, shower activity is expected to pass through Jerusalem during the day, so that clouds will be in the process of clearing in the evening. Therefore, we do not know when the New Moon Day will be at this time; it could go either way.
We plan on viewing the New Moon that evening with a telescope in northern Minnesota and hope to post a photo for the New Moon Report. This report will be different from the past, and we will no longer be publishing monthly lunar calendars; the solar and lunar calendars we published in the past will be simplified into one. This will require you to mark on your calendar the numeric lunar days of the month from now on, and the report, with the known New Moon Day, will indicate which days to number. This will have many advantages. It will allow you to interact with and customize your calendar better and you will be able to mark any appointments in advance without the need to transfer them to a lunar calendar. It also makes it easier for us and will allow the New Moon Report to get out to you much faster as we will not have to put together a calendar for the report.
Below is the calendar for the rest of the year, and as for next year's calendar, we will publish it spiral-bound (in addition to PDF) so that you can hang it on your wall. Space is allowed for writing the numeric lunar days at the top of each day and places are given for you to write in your sunset times for the commencement of Sabbath rest and daily prayer times. For more information on the new calendar format, please visit our calendar page. You will notice that some of the months have been renamed; these are based on the names of months given in the Bible or on names of found to be used by the Canaanites, which were also used by the Hebrews. They all have meaning based on Hebrew words, and thus set the themes for the months.
