Report

We have heard no reports of a sighting in the Jerusalem vicinity, and based on limited webcam footage, it is possible that clouds, which filled most of the sky, obscured any view of the New Moon. Therefore, we default to the full month of 30 days, making the New Moon the third day into the Sabbath (Solar Day 282 on the calendar), so you can mark the New Moon on that day and count 27 days. Yes, you heard correctly! Tebeth this year could potentially be only 27 days, as the Shebat New Moon could appear on the 27th! Don't forget to number the 29th and 30th for this current month, also being the 5th and 6th days of the Feast of Dedication, with the 7th and 8th days of the feast falling on the first two days of the new month.

We hope to one day soon have observers on Mount of Olives watching the New Moon each month, then we would know for sure whether the moon appeared or not, but we can only work with the best information we have.

Important Tebeth Events in Biblical History

1st: The tops of the mountains became visible as the flood waters receded (Gen. 8:5); Ezra and the heads of households convened to investigate the matter of pagan wives among Israel (Ez. 10:16).

5th: Three years into Nebuchadnezzar's final siege of Jerusalem, refugees from the city arrived at Ezekiel's home and declared the city fallen (Eze. 33:21).

10th: The start of that final siege (2 Ki. 25:1; Jer. 39:1; 52:4, Eze. 24:1).

Also occurring during this month, Esther entered the palace of King Ahasuerus and became his queen (Es. 2:16-17); the date is unknown.

Meaning of Kislev

‘Tebeth’ means ‘Goodness’; it comes from the Assyrian verb ‘tebu’, which corresponds to the Hebrew verb ‘taba’ (to ‘sink in’, to ‘make an imprint’), which, in turn, is related to the familiar adjective ‘tob’. Goodness means to make an imprint on peoples’ lives. This is the darkest time of year and it is a time to shine forth goodness to those around us, impressing upon them the goodness of God, which can be expressed by being warm and caring toward others.

The Long-Awaited Surprise

Sorry for the delay. If you have not yet heard, we have published a wall calendar for the next biblical year (179 JE). It is full of pictures and explanations. If you would like to purchase one, please email us at contact@brightbeams.org. We strongly recommend it.

The wall calendar has blue boxes for writing the days of the month and will include all of the worship times. And, on that note, we just made a calculator to calculate the three daylight prayer times (3rd, 6th, and 9th hours). So, it will be easier to include this information from now on; you only need to attain and input your sunrise and sunset times for the 15th of the month. You can still round to the closest quarter hour. The calculator is at the second link below.
