Antichrist

The term “antichrist” is a pretty sensational term, conjuring up some interesting images in the minds of Christians. What many do not know, though, is what the word antichrist actually means. Most take it to mean “against Christ”. Certainly, anyone holding this title would indeed be against Christ, but this is not what the apostle John meant. In ancient Greek, the prefix anti- indicates something which stands in the place of something else. In other words, antichrists are not simply against Christ, but actually (attempt to) stand in His place! This term therefore cannot simply refer to anyone who is against Christ, but only to one who does so by thinking to do His work, whether for themselves or for others.
